Today I’m not going to talk about plants or formulas but I’ll still be talking about skincare. Let’s start with a super extra short quiz : just virtually tick your answer very fast without thinking about it, okay?
So. Life has been super busy recently. A lot of work, a lot of chores, not much sleep… You get the drift. You wake up one morning and pimples are marring your tired (but still beautiful) face. You don’t panick and adjust your regimen. Pimples won’t go away and/or keep coming. Nothing awful, but still, they’re marring your beautiful (but tired) face. What do you do next?
- You’re not one to accept that and you determinedly look for THE product/ingredient that will destroy them.
- You won’t get bothered by a few pimples, you don’t have the time anyway. You just ignore them.
- Wow, alert! You sit back and adjust your life routine as much as you can.
What did you tick? I ticked A. My first move is often to tick A even though – and you saw it coming with my so subtle hints – option C would definitely be the best option. So today, I want to muse as briefly as possible about option C.
No human experience happens in the mind only
Stress can result from too much work and lack of sleep, from too much pressure, from whatever affects our sense of well-being or from what I would call toxic emotions. I won’t elaborate about physical and psychological stress, my aim here is to remind everyone who didn’t tick C that no human experience happens in the mind only.
Once our brain has decided that a situation is dangerous or pleasant, the thought itself becomes a molecular reality through a biochemical reaction and if the situation has been perceived as potentially harmful, it releases a load of hormones to prepare the body to flight or fight. This is fascinating. Our thoughts become a molecular reality!
The chain reaction is useful in many aspects of our life but when we are constantly submitted to what we perceive as threatening situations, our body is overloaded by “stress hormones” that overcome its capacity to deal with them. This affects our skin in many ways : damaged barrier, inflammation, flaring up of skin issues such as acne, psoriasis or rosacea which have an inflammatory aspect, premature ageing…
Nothing new here. I know that. You know that. Still, I ticked A. What did you tick already ? 😉
Skincare beyond the bottle
Treating a skin issue means of course treating symptoms that would lead to more stress, but it means above all preventing this issue by managing stress. I love skincare. I love formulating and using skincare but building a strategy beyond the bottle is a smart move that will make our cosmetics all the more potent.
We can’t and shouldn’t eliminate all factors of stress in our lives. We want to feel good and pretty, not to retire from the world! There are many possibilities left to choose from : yoga, meditation, a walk in the nature, anything that makes us feel good and helps to hit the pause button and let go just a little bit when our skin scream ‘stop!’. It sounds simple yet it isn’t, right?! Proof is my on-off relationship with meditation. Still, it’s worth building new habits.
That’s why I tought this musing could be somewhat worth your time. After all, perhaps we just need to be reminded that :
At the very instant that you think, “I am happy”, a chemical messenger translates your emotion, which has no solid existence whatever in the material world, into a bit of matter so perfectly attuned to your desire that literally every cell in your body learns of your happiness and joins in.
